Hound Breed Of Dog Information

Dogs in the hound group, such as the basset hound, were originally bred for hunting.

The hound dog group is a diverse, historical group. The breeds that make up the group were originally bred to hunt. Some hounds are still used for hunting, but others are friendly family pets that love the feel of a soft couch and a warm lap. According to the Dog Breed Info Center, certain breeds of hound, such as the Ibizan hound, can be sensitive to negativity and need positive based training.

History

The history of the hound dog varies depending on the breed. The Borzoi is a Russian hound breed that traces back to the year 1260. It was used to hunt and chase hares. The Pharaoh hound originated from ancient Egypt and was used to hunt small game such as gazelle. The Pharaoh hound is the oldest dog in written history.

Types

The American Kennel Club (AKC) recognizes 25 different dog breeds as belonging to the hound group. These range from the basset hound to the whippet, from the Irish wolfhound to the English foxhound. Some hounds, such as the beagle and the bloodhound, hunt by scent, whereas others, such as the greyhound, hunt by sight.

Features

Hound dogs come in many shapes and sizes, some with long ears like the basset hound and others with long fur like the Afghan hound. According to the AKC, the one feature most hound dogs share is their sound, known as baying. This is a distinctive, loud howling sound that will make sure everyone in the area knows there's a hound dog about.

Family Pets

According to Beginners Dog Training, hounds make good family pets because of their ability to get along with children and their need to be part of a family. Hounds are not typically aggressive, they are calm, loyal, affectionate and tolerant. Hounds are also good for active families as they love to run, walk, play and explore.

Considerations

Since hounds are hunting dogs, they are usually high energy. Hounds may not be ideally suited for families with little time to devote to exercise. According to Beginners Dog Training, hounds are easily distracted by scents or the sight of prey. Letting a hound off its leash is risky unless you want to chase it down. Training is important for hounds as they can be stubborn. Consistent training helps the hound become a well-mannered dog.
