So many dogs, so much training to accomplish.
Though there is no true "standard" way to become a dog trainer in Ireland, it is still wise to get hands-on experience and to take numerous training courses if you intend to pursue this career. A good starting point, according to the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors, is to pursue an animal behavior degree. A significant amount of Irish dog trainers are self-employed and make house calls. Others work with the police or at animal rescue facilities.

1. Volunteer with a veterinarian or an organization that closely works with dogs. As a student in dog training, you will require a wealth of firsthand experience. Consider volunteering with the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
2. Write down the pros and cons of each kind of dog training available. Many different specialties exist, such as working with guide dogs, military dogs, police dogs, obedience instructors, behaviorists and special needs dogs. Understanding the type of training you wish to do will allow you choose your preferred field of training better.
3. Work as an apprentice. Ask a reputable dog trainer whether he is willing to take on a student--eventually, the position might become a job. Alternatively, visit the website for the Department of Employment and Learning, especially if you live in Northern Ireland, because you may find a list of working dog trainers who are potential employers.
4. Call an insurance agent to obtain insurance for dog trainers, which is a requirement for dog trainers. Contact the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors (APBC) or The Kennel Club (see Resources) about insurance for trainers. Alternatively, ask other dog trainers where they received their insurance.
5. Educate yourself further throughout your career. Because there are many different approaches to training and because training is always changing, remain up-to-date. Attend dog training classes and collaborate with fellow dog trainers.
