Begin A Des Childcare

Activities are an important part of a DES day care facility.

Department of Economic Security (DES) day care provides child care for children of parents who are participating in employment training, remedial classes, General Equivalency Diploma (GED) classes or who are unable to provide care for their children because of physical or emotional conditions. Children whose parents are involved in drug or alcohol treatment programs or who live in a domestic abuse or homeless shelter can also participate. A DES daycare can be in your home or in a larger facility. Starting one requires you to follow the guidelines of your county and state Child Protective Services.

Instructions

1. Call the Day Care Hotline (1-877-254-4619) to discover the DES daycare licensing requirements in your state.

2. Set up fire extinguishers and safety devices, such as baby gates, oven locks and cabinet locks in the kitchen. Place smoke alarms in appropriate locations throughout the facility. Child Protective Services will inspect for these items.

3. Place first aid kits in the kitchen, the bathroom and in your desk, along with disposable gloves for quick availability in case of an emergency. DES day cares must have first aid kits in place. The licensing requirements in your state may require you to also have a CPR course or a first aid course.

4. Arrange child-size tables and chairs in safe locations away from windows and doors. Place book shelves and toys in appropriate places where they won't fall on the tables. Place toys in containers and clearly mark them with labels. DES daycare requirements in most states want your containers to be clearly marked when they inspect new day cares. For example, a container of markers needs to be labeled as "Markers."

5. Draw out and highlight an emergency escape plan for earthquakes, fires and tornadoes. Hang this by a door and have a clear plan in case these situations arise. This will be required in most states for a DES day care.

6. Install a home telephone if you don't already have one for 911 accessibility.

7. Print out a parent handbook with your rules and regulations for the DES day care.

8. Have folders available to keep thorough records for each child, copies of their immunization cards and their attendance record.

9. Arrange nap mats in a closet or an area off of the floor. In a DES day care, most parents cannot afford to provide these for their children. You can ask your caseworker if these can be provided for you by the state. But in most states, these are up to you to provide. The mats or cots will be required for nap time.

10. Provide healthy meals and menu schedules. Keep copies of menus in a folder so that if you are inspected, you can prove that you are providing proper care in your DES day care.
