Train 1yearold Young puppies

Your puppy looks to you for direction.

Most 1 year-old dogs are simply full-grown puppies living in an adult-sized body. They are in their adolescent stage much like a human teenager. Puppies of this age cannot yet be trusted to handle full adult privileges. Depending upon the breed of dog, the age of full maturity can be anywhere from 1 to 3 years. If you are just beginning to train a puppy of this age, there may already be some learned behaviors which need to be re-established.

Instructions

1. You are the surrogate pack for your dog.

Develop a consistent routine and schedule for the puppy's feeding, exercise and training schedule. All members of the household, or "pack," must follow the same commands and rules with the puppy to maintain consistency.

2. Assign a one or two word command to any action, whether it is for praise or correction. Each word should have only one meaning, as a puppy cannot reason multiple meanings.

3. The crate is a postive and effective training tool.

Use a dog crate in your training routine, as it is for all behaviors. This applies for five to 10 minute intervals during the day, overnight or when you're away.

4. Obedience classes provide support for dog and handler.

Enroll in a dog obedience class. This provides support, structure and guidance for both the handler and dog.

5. Attach the leash on the puppy in the house and keep it with you. This provides an ongoing training opportunity to incorporate skills learned in training classes, making the puppy part of a structured daily routine.
