Develop A Small Golf Area

You can golf in your own backyard.

Most golf enthusiasts consider putting a mini golf area in their backyard. Having a mini golf course provides an opportunity to hone your skills in pitching, chipping and putting. Some professional golfers have a practice area in their backyard. The mini golf area also provides a recreational activity for family and friends who come over for backyard barbecues. If carefully designed and landscaped, it can also be aesthetically pleasing. Full length golf courses often resemble lovely parks, with lush green grass, flowers and trees. You can achieve a visually appealing look to your mini course as well.

Instructions

1. Decide on a location. Consider your goals for the mini course. If it is primarily a practice space just for you, it could be located in a back corner of the yard. If you want it to be more of a focal point, you should design it to be visible from the patio or the windows. A mini course lighted at night can be beautiful.

2. Design the course. Don't rush into a project like this. Carefully lay out your design on paper and then using spray paint or lengths of string, outline the elements of the course in your backyard. Visualize playing the course and make adjustments to your design to make it more fun and challenging. You could include water features such as ponds or streams. A mini course wouldn't be complete without a sand bunker or two. You could decide to bring in soil and elevate the tees or greens. The dimensions of the course depend on the size of your property, how much of the area you want to devote to the mini course, and your budget.

3. Select the materials. The first materials budget you develop may be so high that it could cause you to rethink the whole project. Consider starting with a basic design--tees and greens--and adding more elaborate features later on, such as elevating the tees or incorporating ponds and waterfalls. The big decision is whether you want to use synthetic or natural turf. Synthetic turf may cost more initially to install, with labor and materials, but the ongoing maintenance is much less in both time and money. To create an authentic golf course quality putting green with natural turf requires much more specialized maintenance than the typical Bermuda or rye grass lawn. Fertilizing, irrigation, dealing with turf diseases, and mowing are all more involved. Synthetic turf has been improved to where it is a close approximation of golf course grass---and is green year round in all climates.

4. Construct the course. The more care you have put into planning the project, the smoother the installation should go. Consider hiring a landscaping crew to assist with the manual labor rather than just having family members or buddies assist. You may even want to bring them in at the design stage to make sure you have not overlooked steps in the installation process. They may also be able to buy materials at wholesale prices. If you use synthetic turf, the company supplying the turf can assist with design and installation.
