Making Clothes For Any Dog

Selecting the right materials

To begin making dog clothes, the project starts with selecting the right materials for the dog, and the easiest materials for the owner to sew. Novice sewers will usually want to choose cotton or knit materials. (Material such as denim and corduroy are best reserved for veteran sewers.) Consider the size of the dog when you select the right materials. For example, many beginners will start off with a pattern for their dog from a sewing or crafts store. The pattern on the sewing kit will indicate the size of the chest. The owner needs only to measure the widest area of the dog's chest with a measuring tape to ensure the pattern will fit. You can also make clothing for dogs from scratch without the purchase of a pattern.

Sewing with a pattern

Sewing with a pattern only requires that you lay the material flat on a table (without stretching the material), and then pin the pattern to the material. Cut two layers of the material along the contour of the pattern. After removing the pattern, you sew the layers of material together (that is, side by side, and not top to bottom). Turn the sewn material inside out, and the clothing is complete. You might want to sew stretchy material onto the material to make the dog clothing hold in place after you slip it on your pet. Other patterns require that you sew on buttons or Velcro tape to help secure the clothing on the dog.

You can use an elastic material or stretchy fabric for the dog shirt or dress. You lay the fabric on a table and then fold it in half one time. Use measuring tape to measure from the dog's neck to the middle of its back. Draw the measurements with a thick pencil onto the fold of the material. Divide the dog's waist measurement in half, and then draw it onto the material. Measure the short part of the back to the front leg, and then transfer the measurement to the material. Measure the circumference of the front legs with the measuring tape from the shoulder to the dog's side. Transfer the curvature of the dog's legs to the material with a thick pencil. Cut arm holesfrom the measurements. Sew together the front and back shoulder section on the material, and then sew together the opposite shoulder section. Sew both sides of the material to complete the dog's shirt or dress. You can also sew ribbons or lace directly to the back or the hems to make the dog's shirt look like a dress.
