Develop A Chair Using Recyclables

Chair made from recyclables

You need a new chair around the home or yard, but you need one that is both cheap and unique. Your solution is simple: build a chair using recyclables. Salvage yards are treasure troves of recyclable stuff that could easily fashion a chair, or you may already have the pieces laying around your home or garage.

Instructions

1. Make the seat. Opt for something sturdy with a flat top big enough for people to sit on. Wooden chairs can feature a seat made from wooden milk crates, boxes or an old wooden table. Those who want to make a metal chair can go with squatty metal drums, short metal pedestals or an upside down metal bucket, washtub or garbage can.

2. Create the back. Pick a flat, straight object that will serve as the back of the chair. Opt for something that is long enough for people to lean back on that has some extra length where you can attach it to the chair's seat. Wooden chair backs can have slats from the palettes, wooden trellis pieces or a simple board or two. Metal chair backs can be made from iron gate pieces, criss-cross dog kennel sides or a series of lightweight, metal bars used from old lawn furniture or fence posts.

3. Attach the back to the seat. Nail the wooden chair back to the seat base along the back of the seat base. Use heavy-duty wood nails and pound a series of them on the length of the wood that overlaps the seat part. Weld the longer parts of the chair's back to the back of the seat portion.

4. Paint it up. Prepare the metal for painting by sanding off any rust, rough or shiny spots so paint best adheres. Use a spray paint for quick, even coverage of the entire chair or use acrylics and a brush to paint designs. Outdoor paint will work best on either and can be used on both metal or wood. Once the chair is painted, allow to dry and then spray with a sealer, such as polyurethane, so the paint does not chip.

5. Add a cushion or two. Finish off your recyclable chair by creating recyclable cushions. Take an old pillow case and stuff it with foam, folded material or an even older pillow you were going to throw away. Stitch the pillow case shut so the stuffing stays stuffed inside. Place the seat cushion directly on the seat. Make another one for the back if you wish, using a long cord to tie it upright to the back of the chair.
