Chihuahua mates should interact several times before breeding.
Introducing two Chihuahuas is a crucial step in the breeding process. The dogs must be able to socialize properly first, to ensure they will both be comfortable when the breeding takes place. Generally, the bitch is left at the stud's house several days prior to the breeding so that she will have time to become familiarized with her environment. The two dogs should be introduced several times before the intended time of breeding, to prevent any aggression and facilitate a successful breeding.
Instructions
1. Bring the bitch to the stud's home several days before the breeding will take place. This will allow her to feel comfortable with her surroundings. The owner of the stud should try to match the conditions of the home she came from as best as is possible. For example, if she stayed in a kennel or a crate, provide one for her while at the stud's home. If she is used to staying inside, allow her in the house for part of the day.
2. Place a leash on both Chihuahuas. Muzzle the bitch or the stud as well, if either are known to be aggressive.
3. Walk the dogs in a single file line. The physical activity will help dispel some of the emotional intensity upon first meeting. Allow the second dog to sniff the lead dog, but try to keep them moving. After several minutes, switch directions, so the other dog can sniff his or her new mate.
4. Praise the Chihuahuas throughout the interaction. This helps relax them. Massage their backs frequently as well. This is also help stimulate the bitch when it is time to breed her.
5. Allow the dogs to walk side by side for 15 minutes. Look for either dog to show signs of "bowing," which is lowering themselves on their front feet as an indication of play.
6. Remove the leashes and allow the dogs to interact freely only if they show signs of positive interaction. This should occur in a controlled environment, such as a small room or a fenced area in the lawn. If dogs appear aggressive or uncomfortable towards each other stop for the day and repeat the single file walking routine the next day. The first introduction should last at least 30 minutes if the dogs get along well. Subsequent interactions should last one to two hours.
7. Allow the Chihuahuas to interact 2 to 3 times before breeding.
