The golden retriever is patient, making it perfect for children.
If you want to introduce a new puppy or dog into your home with young children, do your homework first so that your addition is a successful one. Certain breeds are better suited for children, and the American Kennel Club (AKC) website is a great resource to use when making your decision.
The AKC has published a list of the most popular dogs in America for 2010, which is a good place to start if you are looking for a dog that ranks well with the general population.
Additionally, at least five of the AKC's Top Ten Most Popular Dogs (there are many more on that list) appear on PetMD's Top 10 Recommended Breeds for Children. Thus, the dog breeds that appear on both lists are great choices to bring into your home if you have children.
Golden Retriever
The golden retriever is PetMD's number one recommended dog breed for children and is also listed in the AKC's Top Ten Most Popular Dogs. With this in mind you simply can't go wrong as the retriever is loyal, intelligent, playful and confident.
Labrador Retriever
A Labrador retriever dog is noted for its patience, playfulness, protectiveness and reliability. Number two on the PetMd list, labs are generally sweet and smart.
Poodle
PetMD lists the poodle as its number three choice not only because it is intelligent, but also due to its easygoing nature. Poodles shed very little; while that's great for kids who may have allergies, it also means you'll need to have a poodle groomed on a regular basis.
Beagle
Beagles are an extremely popular choice for families with children due to their happy-go-lucky nature and friendliness toward other pets as well as children. Beagles are loyal and generally have a strong build which is good for kids who may know not their own strength.
Bull Dog
You may think the bull dog has a bad reputation, but it's actually the pitt bull that is surrounded by controversy. The bull dog is a very friendly breed that tends to be laid back. In fact, its docile nature coupled with a sturdy body frame is great for children who may be a little too rough.
Seek Highly Trainable Breeds
In their article, "The Best Dog Breeds for Families and Children", Sandy Eckstein and Jeanie Lerche Davis note that "highly trainable breeds are great with kids because they're usually eager to please and usually more family oriented." This group includes golden retrievers and Labrador retrievers.
