What To Anticipate From The Bull Fight In Mexico

Fighting bulls are bred to charge at the matador.

Bullfighting in Mexico has been one of the most popular sports in the country for the last 400 years. Bullfighting in Mexico is also known as "fiesta brava," and attracts thousands of spectators every year. The largest bullfighting ring in the world is Plaza Mexico in Mexico City, which seats 40,000 people.

First Stage

In the corrida, or first stage, a trumpet sounds and the bull enters the ring. The bullfighter, or matador, uses a large purple and yellow cape to entice the bull. The bull displays his speed and strength by charging at the matador. Mounted horsemen stick the bull in the back of the neck with long lances in order to weaken the bull.

Second Stage

Men called banderilleros try to stick the bull with darts in order to tire the animal out. This stage is known as the La Suerte de Banderillas.

Final Stage

The matador will use a red cape to taunt the bull and dodge the charge. He will lead the bull into the middle of the ring where he will thrust his sword into the bull's neck and kill it. The matador may be awarded a trophy depending upon his showmanship, bravery and skill in the fight.
