Pointers are natural hunting dogs. They learn to point by instinct when they smell waterfowl. If you like to hunt waterfowl, then a pointer is the perfect dog for you. Like retrievers, they have soft mouths and can retrieve the fallen waterfowl as well as point it out for you. Follow these steps to learn train a pointer to hunt.
Instructions
1. Train your pointer in the basic obedience commands from the time he is a puppy since it will be easier to get him to listen. Begin to train him basic commands such as sit, stay and heel. Your pointer needs to learn to listen to you in the yard before he can listen to you on a hunt.
2. Teach your pointer to come when called. The best way to do this is to tie a lead to your pointer and call her while gently pulling on her lead. Reward her when she comes to you without you having to pull on the lead to reinforce the good behavior.
3. Instruct your pointer on walk beside you instead of in front. It is easiest to teach this method using a choke or training collar. This will ensure that your pointer will stay by your side during the hunt.
4. Take your pointer out into the field to pick up the scent of pheasants or geese. This will bring out his natural instinct to point. If he locates some waterfowl, don't let him chase them since he needs to learn to point initially.
5. Play fetch with your pointer to teach him retrieve waterfowl. Rub the scent of a deceased duck onto a decoy and throw it. Encourage your pointer to fetch it and drop it at your feet by rewarding him with treats for his behavior.
6. Expose your pointer to the sound of a gun by taking her with you to shoot blanks. When she becomes accustomed to the gunshot, use a partner to throw up decoys while you shoot them. Train your pointer to fetch it and bring it back to you.
