Derby Lane Scholarship grants

Derby Lane racetrack runs greyhound dog races in St. Petersburg, Florida

The mention of "Derby Lane" to people in Florida will most likely bring to mind the Derby Lane greyhound racetrack in St. Petersburg -- the oldest greyhound track in the country. But for students in the St. Petersburg area of Pinellas County, the Derby Lane name means more than a race track; it means scholarship money in the form of Derby Lane Scholarships.

Sources of Funding

Derby Lane Scholarships come from two sources, both of which have connections to the Derby Lane race track: The St. Petersburg Kennel Club, which is part of the Derby Lane racetrack, sponsors the Derby Lane Scholars Program as part of its community outreach and philanthropy program; the Pinellas Education Foundation administers the St. Petersburg Kennel Club Derby Lane Scholarship, which receives funding from Derby Lane racetrack and Richard Winning, a St. Petersburg College Foundation member. This scholarship is administered by the St. Petersburg College Foundation.

Function

Both scholarships provide tuition assistance to St. Petersburg area high school and college students to reduce the costs of attending college. They also help bring positive attention to the Derby Lane racetrack. By offering college scholarships, Derby Lane shows it's more than a racetrack and gambling center; it's also a beneficial contributor to the local community.

Features

The St. Petersburg Kennel Club Derby Lane Scholarship goes to graduating high school seniors to be used for a two- or four-year college, vocational school or technical training. At least three scholarship recipients are chosen from each of the public high schools in Pinellas County. The scholarship money may be used only at a public or private Florida post-secondary institution. Amounts vary depending on the amount of funding the Kennel Club raises each year.

The St. Petersburg College Derby Lane Scholarship is open only to admitted and current St. Petersburg College students. Students must have a 3.0 grade point average and demonstrate financial need to be eligible for the scholarship. Amounts vary depending on financial need.

Process

To apply for the St. Petersburg Kennel Club Derby Lane Scholarship, visit the Pinellas Education Foundation website to submit an online application. Scholarship recipients are chosen based on academic merit, community and volunteer activities and leadership roles. The St. Petersburg College Derby Lane Scholarship application is online at the St. Petersburg College Financial Aid website. Scholarship applications are available starting in the spring each year.
