Proper Care Of A Pitbull Puppy

Pitbulls can make good companions if they are trained properly.

Raising a puppy can be enjoyable, but also comes with a lot of responsibilities. Pitbull puppies can be loyal and intelligent pets. Since they are full of energy, it is important that they get plenty of exercise every day. Proper care from the moment they are born can help them live a long and healthy life. Pitbull puppies are normally very loving to humans, but they need to be trained to get along with other animals.

Instructions

1. Take your pitbull puppy to a veterinarian to get all of its scheduled vaccinations to prevent disease and maintain a healthy immune system. Return to the vet for regularly scheduled check-ups, or if your puppy looks or acts sick.

2. Provide your puppy with a special area where he can have his own bed. Puppies need a lot of sleep, and providing an area to rest in will make him feel more comfortable.Crate training is commonly used to aid in house training since most dogs will not soil in the area where they sleep. Just place his bed inside of a wire crate and you can either leave the door open if you are home or close the crate if you plan to be gone for awhile.

3. Choose a high-grade dog food to feed your pitbull and feed it on a schedule of three times per day. Every puppy is different, so there is no set amount to give him at each feeding. Growing puppies should not be put on a diet that is too restricted, unless they begin to get obese. Let your puppy guide you; he will stop eating when he is full. Read the labels on bags of dog food and look for one that lists meat as the first ingredient. Look for a crude protein content of at least 30 percent, crude fat of no more than 20 percent and 4 percent or less of fiber content.

4. Provide your puppy with plenty of fresh water each time you feed him. Remember to take him out after he is finished eating and drinking so you will have less accidents.

5. Start training your puppy at a young age. Pitbulls are dominant, so it is important to gain control of your puppy with your voice. Use positive reinforcement for training, since this breed likes to please. When your puppy does something good or listens to a command, reward him with treats that he may like and plenty of praise. Use a happy-toned voice to tell him how good he is doing while you are giving him the enticing treat.

6. Take your puppy around other people and animals when he is young so that he can become used to socializing. Let strangers play with him and pet him so that he is not afraid of people.

7. Exercise your puppy every day so that he can use up some of his energy. Take him for a walk at least twice a day and try to play with him inside or outside, as well. You and you puppy can both benefit from the exercise.
