Homemade Bitter Appletype Spray

A puppy trying to decide if it should chew the furniture.

Bitter apple spray is an anti-chew training tool for while your puppy is teething. Nothing is safe when a puppy is teething so protect your furniture, walls and rugs by using this bitter-tasting nontoxic formula. Spray it on any surface and its harsh, bitter taste will deter the puppy from chewing on that item. Make a bitter apple-type spray at home as a quick and inexpensive alternative to commercial brands. Before spraying furniture, test the mixture in an inconspicuous area to ensure it doesn't change the color or damage the furniture material.

Bitter Vinegar

Your puppy will turn up its nose after one whiff of this vinegar and water spray. Combine 1 cup of white vinegar with 1 cup of apple cider vinegar and 1 cup of water in a spray bottle. Shake well before applying the solution.

Generally, one spray will do the trick. Spray all table legs, baseboards and couch cushions. Don't forget any of your puppy's usual chewing spots. Reapply every few days to freshen the bitter taste.

Lemon Juice and Rubbing Alcohol

Many commercial bitter apple sprays contain isopropyl alcohol. Although this recipe contains isopropyl alcohol, otherwise known as rubbing alcohol, use only a small amount. You want the bitter taste to be strong but not so overpowering that it makes your animal sick.

Combine 4 oz of water with 3 oz of lemon juice and 1 oz of rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle. Shake well and then spray a small amount on the back of your hand. Test its strength by licking it. If the alcohol tastes too strong, dilute it with more water.

This mixture lingers a little longer on furniture than the bitter vinegar spray so reapply only as needed or when your pup starts licking or showing interest in the sprayed areas again.

Alum

Pups are turned off by the smell and taste of alum. Purchase a small bottle of alum in the spice and baking aisle at the local grocery store and mix it with water for a nasty-tasting concoction.

Combine 1 tsp. of alum with 2 cups of water in a spray bottle. Shake well until the white powdery alum dissolves. This mixture is particularly nasty--one spray may do the trick.
