Exterior dog kennels keep dogs safe, are a spacious alternative to crates and prevent strangulation sometimes caused by tethering. Many pet owners build a kennel with a canopy and place a doghouse inside the enclosure to keep the dog dry and warm. The kennels can be placed on gravel, dirt or grass, but this allows the dog to rip up any flooring provided and/or dig his way out. Owners also install kennels over a concrete pad. When the concrete is smaller than the base of the kennel, the dog can still dig in the space around the concrete, also risking getting his foot stuck in the gap. The best flooring for a dog kennel is a concrete slab that is larger than the kennel. The kennel can be installed on top of the concrete, secured by anchors.
Instructions
1. Assemble your kennel according to the directions supplied and place it on top of the concrete slab.
2. Mark the spots where you will anchor the kennel base. The kennel will have a steel frame to hold the fencing on all four sides. You will need to place an anchor every 24 inches to effectively hold the kennel in its place. Place the brackets over the rail and use the permanent marker to mark the spot in the bracket that holds the anchor.
3. Remove the brackets and place to the side.
4. Mark the corners of the kennel with the pencil. Move the kennel out of the way so you can get to all of the marks on the concrete.
5. Drill a pilot hole in the concrete with your drill where you have marked the hole with the marker. Use a concrete drill bit that is 1/4 inch smaller than the anchors you will use. Go slow when drilling so you do not crack the concrete. Do this for every hole you have marked.
6. Place your kennel back on the concrete pad. Line the corners of the kennel up with the pencil marks you made in Step 4.
7. Place the brackets in the spots where you have drilled the holes.
8. Put the anchor through the bracket and into the pilot hole below it. Place the socket attachment on the drill. Drill the anchor into the concrete. Tighten the anchor until it is flush with the bracket. Do this for all of the holes.
