Origin
With the use of ancient drawings and writings, it is said that the Maltese dog has been around since 5000 B.C. Evidence has been presented that the Maltese dogs originated in Asia. However, some believe that they originated on the Isle of Malta in the Mediterranean Sea.
Name
Many countries originally referred to the Maltese as the "Melitaie Dog" before it was officially named. The Kennel Club of London made the breed name "Maltese" official in the 19th century.
Britain
During Henry VII's reign, Maltese dogs were brought over from Asia. This breed was a favorite of Queen Elizabeth I. They were very popular in the 19th century.
The United States
It wasn't until the early 1900s that Maltese dogs made their way to the U.S. Many dogs were brought over from Europe and parts of Asia.
Crossbreeds
Crossbreeding Maltese dogs with Poodles, Pugs, and Shih Tzus are becoming very popular. Through crossbreeding, breeders have created smaller, non-shedding versions of the Maltese.
