Fence Height Needs For Any Childcare

Fence heights for day care centers vary by state.

Every state in the country has regulations concerning the operation of day care centers. Within the regulations are specific codes that set the height of fencing at day care centers to protect the health and safety of children.

Play Area

Outdoor space requiring fencing must meet certain dimensions per child. For instance, in Texas, 80 square feet is required per child where in Virginia and California the outdoor space requirement is 75 square feet per child. A daycare center that has 25 children must provide 2,000 square feet of fenced area in Texas.

Fence Height

The height of the fence can range from three feet to five feet, depending upon state requirements. Nebraska only requires a height of three feet but Virginia requires four feet. Height requirements are different if children have access to a pool. California pool fencing is five feet in height and playground fencing is four feet.

Exceptions

Texas allows no-fence exceptions at day care centers. Exceptions include day care centers that provide care for just after-school students, alternate, get-well or ill children and for children over the age of five.
