Clavamox Strategy To Dogs

Using Clavamox for dogs

Clavamox is an oral antibiotic produced by Pfizer Animal Health. It is used in dogs and cats to treat bacterial infections and is available in tablet or drop form. Clavamox is a combination of two drugs: amoxicillin, an antibiotic, and clavulanic acid, an enzyme inhibitor.

Uses

Clavamox is a broad spectrum antibiotic. The combination of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid works together to treat and prevent bacterial infections in cats and dogs. Clavamox requires a prescription from a veterinarian.

Dosage

Clavamox tablets are available in four dosage sizes: 62.5 milligrams, 125 milligrams, 250 milligrams and 375 milligrams. It is also available as 62.5 milligrams per milliliter drops. The generally prescribed dose for dogs and cats is 6.25 milligrams per pound of body weight every 12 hours.

Benefits

Clavamox is effective in treating respiratory, ear, urinary tract, skin and soft-tissue infections such as cellulites, abscesses and wounds. It is also effective for persistent pyoderma (the second most common inflammatory skin disease in dogs), a skin infection marked by pus-filled wounds. Clavamox has been effective in treating canine periodontal disease.

Side Effects

Side effects can include nausea, drowsiness, hyperactivity, diarrhea or allergic reactions, including shortness of breath, rash, hives, loss of consciousness or swelling of the lips, tongue or face. Kidney problems can also occur.

Warnings

Give Clavamox with food. Store drops in the refrigerator. Administer Clavamox for the exact length directed by your veterinarian. Continue to administer Clavamox for the prescribed duration, even if symptoms improve, because symptoms can improve before the infection is entirely treated.
